Italians have been coming to live in Britain for hundreds of years, and in larger groups since at least the nineteenth century. Many came as economic migrants, doing work which ranged from that of street vendors all the way to travelling musicians.

Those who arrived after the Second World War were also largely economic migrants, although the nature of the work offered had generally altered. There are many reasons why Italians came to Britain at this time, although most can be associated with the effects of the War on people and landscapes, combined with an ongoing labour shortage in Britain.
